A Brief Introduction
On opening day last season, the Pirates suffered a tough loss. Closer Kent Tekulve served up a game-winning two run homer to Dave Roberts of the Astros. For the Pirates, Bruce Kison, Enrique Romo, Will McEnaney had allowed only an unearned run before Tekulve took over. It was a tough start for the Pirates who would go on to lose 7 of their first 8 games. Fast forward six months and the same Pirates finished by winning 8 of their last 10 games to win the pennant on the final day of the season. They would win the World Series in five games with McEnaney closing out the final game. Fortunes sure changed for so many teams. It looked like the Dodgers and Tigers were league Champions but both lost the league on the final day of the season. We had races like we had never seen before, so many at once, so riveting. Changes have been few across baseball as we head into 1981. The Padres spend their first year in the National League after nine years in Division Two. The Angels become the only team to spend the first ten years of the era in Division Two. But changes are coming right around the corner. Ground was recently broken in Brooklyn for a baseball stadium for an expansion team to begin play in Division Two in 1982. Another team will begin play in Mile High Stadium in Denver. There are no labor issues in the Relegation World. Teams are non-profit entities and a great deal of money is split by the players. Welcome to the 1981 Season, the tenth year of the relegation era!
