By 1949, WW II had been over for about three years.  Jackie Robinson was beginning his third year while Johnny Mize, Joe DiMaggio, Schoolboy Rowe, Johnny Sain, Pete Reiser, and others were nearing the end.

I added doubles and triples against and GDPs to the DMB pitcher event tables, but other than that this will essentially be an out-of-the box 1949 replay, using actual or near actual lineups and transactions about 95 percent of the time. I manage the home team and the cm manages the visitors (for the most part).

In this replay, however, Hank Greenberg, age 38, returns to Major League Baseball after spending 1948 in retirement, and Sal Maglie, age 32, returns to the Giants when Commissioner Happy Chandler pardons Maglie and others who were suspended for five years when they violated their contracts or the reserve clause and jumped to the Mexican League in 1946.

Hank Greenberg last played for Pittsburgh.  In 1947 he hit 22 home runs for the Pirates after coming over from Detroit.  After serving five years in the service, he hit 44 home runs in 1946.  Does Hank have anything left? manager Red Rolfe hopes as much, picking him from the Pirates after they had signed off.

Sal Maglie hasn't played in the Big Leagues since 1945 (5-4, 2.35) but did play in the Mexican League in 1946 and part of 1947 and in Canada for the Drummondville Cubs in 1947 & 1948.

Tiger manager Red Rolfe has graciously provided his diary and notes from the 1949 season. His observations will periodically be included.  Rolfe, a Dartmouth College graduate, managed the Tigers from 1949 until being fired mid-season 1952.
Red Rolfe writes prior to and during Spring Training in 1949: "Baseball cannot be played entirely by the book.  Players are not robots who respond automatically to push buttons.  They are personalities who require individual treatment."

Among the perceived holes that Rolfe sought to fill when he took over the Tigers was finding a high-performing first baseman. Three cadidates came to spirng training, Paul Campbell, Tony Luppien, and George Vico.  But then Hank showed up and that changed everything.

Other significant events leading up to opening day:

10/12/1948 - The Yankees sign Casey Stengel to a two-year contract.  Stengel managed the Oakland Oaks in 1948, champions of the Pacific Coast League.

11/10/1948 - The Tigers acuire catcher Aaron Robinson (.252/8/39) from the White Sox for southpaw Billy Pierce   (3-0, 6.34) and cash.

11/11/1948 - At John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Joe DiMaggio undergoes another surgey for bone-spurs on his heel.

11/26/1948 - NL president Ford Frick steps in and pays $350 for coffin and funeral services for Hack Wilson, whose body had not been claimed and who died three days earlier in Baltimore at the age of 48.

12/14/1948 - The Senators send pitcher Early Wynn (8-19, 5.82) and first baseman Mickey Vernon (.242/3/78) to the Indians for first baseman Eddie Robinson (.254/16/83) along with pitchers Joe Haynes (9-10, 3.97) and Ed Klieman  (3-2, 2.60).

12/15/1948 - The Dodgers acquire Mike McCormick (.303/1/38) from the Braves for accident and injury-prone Pete Reiser (.236/1/19).

02/07/1949 - Joe DiMaggio (.320/39/108) signs with the Yankees for $100,000.

02/10/1949 - Ted Williams announces, sort of, he will retire after the 1951 season.

03/02/1949 - Still experiencing pain in his heel, Joe DiMaggio returns to John Hopkins Hospital.  But is told to suck it up because he is all better.

04/11/1949 - Joe DiMaggio leaves a spring training game when is heel acts up once again.

04/12/1949 - Joe DiMaggio returns to Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He is diagnosed with "immature calcium deposits adjacent to the heel bone."  He is out indefinitely, so now the Bombers will have to suck it up.

Morning of Sunday, May 1, 1949 - DUROCHER SUSPENDED - APRIL LEADERS

DUROCHER BACKED BY GIANTS' OWNER: Apparently, Leo Durocher will maintain a policy of silence until he appears before Commissioner A. B. Chandler at Cincinnati on Tuesday. The suspended manager of the Giants, sidelined by the baseball commissioner following an alleged attack on a fan (Fred Boysen) last Thursday at the Polo Grounds, spent yesterday at home, listening to a broadcast of his team's game with the Braves.

Years later, Durocher would claim he never came near Boysen and that Commissioner Happy Chandler over reacted (by suspending him) after he heard Boysen was going to sue baseball.
