Zero is average. Plus numbers are above average and negative numbers are below average."

Our Approach to Rating Players ------------------------------ Earlier this year we approached Baseball Info Solutions about generating the subjective player ratings for Diamond Mind Baseball this season. Many of you know them already from the annual Bill James Handbook that we used to carry. (We stopped because we just couldn't compete with the Amazon pricing.) They also publish other terrific books like the essential Fielding Bible and Bill James Gold Mine. You can learn more about BIS at www.baseballinfosolutions.com. Their home page says it all: "We specialize in: Collecting, Interpreting and Disseminating in-depth baseball statistics." Rating players is the most time intensive task in creating a new season for DMB and with their resources and experience, it's worked out to be excellent match. I'm confident that with the DMB game engine and internal player event tables coupled with the BIS subjective player ratings like defense, running, bunting, etc., we've produced the most accurate DMB season ever.

TedRoethke threw in some extra fancy-schmancy formatting ornamentation, choked back a scream, bit his tongue, and then wrote: Jeff in Western WA wrote: Still a guy w/ over 30SB is a "Pr" base runner, that's unprecedented I think?? Is it really correct?? DMB's running and stealing ratings (as do James's BR and SB ratings) quantify different things.

I don't know that I agree. Andrus takes the extra base at a higher rate than Pedroia, yet gets 2 notches lower in the rating system? Sure he made 3 more outs in less opportunities and they faced the same defenses for the most part, but unless you watched all the plays you wouldn't know if a great throw was involved or poor base running.
Bottom line, I wouldn't feel comfortable with Andrus being rated PR unless the Texas 3b coach told me he agreed. He's an excellent base stealer, doesn't ground into dp's, takes the extra base at a greater rate than league average. This doesn't add up to a PR baserunner imo.
