Sometimes a game gets away from you with substitutions. In this game the Giants had made a lot of moves with the infielders. As you can see the score remained
the same from the first inning. Ron Hunt was due up with two outs and Willie McCovey at third in the top of the ninth. I (Herman Franks) had Ken Henderson
pinch hit for Hunt. He came through with a base hit to tie the game. Unfortunately, when the bottom of the ninth came into play there were no obvious players
for 2B and SS; only Jim Davenport. I checked my 'Total Baseball' book on all remaining players on the bench and in the line-up to see my options. One
of my last attempts was Willie Mays. He played once in 1963 and once in 1964 at short.
Ivan DeJesus grounded a single past Mays. Walter Alston sent DeJesus with the steal. Gary Carter threw the ball high to second but Mays jumped up and brought the tag down to send Ivan back to the bench. Unfortunately for Mays, with two outs and a runner on in the tenth, he grounded into a force play. Maury Wills doubled to open the tenth, Jim Lefebvre was walked, and Steve Yeager hit a long single to leftcenter and that was all she wrote. Baseball doesn't always give you the "feel good" ending you would like.
