Hatrack Hines watched the ball get past his backup catcher Chris Coste and go to the backstop. Here we go again, he thought. Tim Stauffer was on the mound for the Rockport Clippers as they hosted the Redwood City Peppers. Stauffer was having a terrible season. He was 1-8 with an ERA over 10. Stauffer was a guy that everyone liked. He was good guy, a great character guy as the Rockport front office liked to refer to him. Great guy or not, he had to be able to pitch or he was not going to be a Clipper for long, thought Hines. Stauffer had walked the first two Pepper hitters to start the game. Then came the passed ball that got by Coste, another "nice guy", and Stauffer was in trouble like he had been so many times this season. Hatrack thought about who they could sign to replace Stauffer as the 4th starter, but he knew the scouts had not turned up anyone. He had a bad feeling that his last place ball club was going to have to ride out the season with Stauffer. Anyway, he knew the front office liked the kid and would give him every chance in the world to get things going. He resented the fact that it was him would ultimately take the fall if the front office's plans did not pan out.
Hanley Ramirez singled to score the two Peppers who had received Stuffer's early charity. Stauffer then Struck out Mark Reynolds and got Lance Berkman to bounce into an inning ending double play. Hines was relieved Stauffer escaped with just the two runs across, however he was bracing for more and was already planning his bullpen usage for what looked to be anouther long day.
In the top of the 2nd Stauffer had a one, two, three inning. Then he hung another zero in the next and the next and so it continued all the way through the 8th. Stauffer had, at least for the moment, pulled himself together and had shutdown the Peppers bats. Meanwhile the Clippers were beating up on Tim Wakefield who was also having a poor season for Redwood City. Stauffer exited after 8 innings. He gave up only the 2 runs on just 4 hits. After the first two hitters of the game he only walked one more while racking up 9 K's. Hatrack was glad to see a good result for a nice guy. Then, getting back to his normal self, he thought, it is about time.
