Wow, what a day. First a scoreless duel into the 16th (see my post on THAT). Now, down 3-1 in the 6th inning with 2 out and Petrocelli on first, Carbo belts a drive to deep center field in Tiger Stadium, Stanley going back, back, and CAN'T get to it. Bengal-land is 440 feet deep in right center, and so Carbo is surely digging for three as Petro scores...but he keeps on going around third...the throw to the plate is...NOT IN TIME. Inside the park home run for Bernie Carbo, and the game is tied.

And that's not all in this game. Still tied 3-3 in the top of the 9th, Burleson singles with one out off Detroit reliever Jim Ray. Cecil Cooper pinch-hits for Doug Griffin, but he flies out to right. Two out. Yaz is sitting on the bench, Cater started in his place (a rare event so far this season). I had declined to use him as a pinch-hitter in the 7th because I figured he was sitting for a reason, probably nagging injury, and would only use him as a last resort. With a runner on first and two out, I hesitated again to use him, but I overcame my hesitation and up to the plate he came. Ray serves him ball one, then ball two. Yaz must have guessed right, becaue he launched the next pitch far back into the right-field stands to put the Sox up 6-4. COOL! But, as the TV gadget commercials so often intone, that's not all. Tommy Harper comes up next with one homer on the year and belts one over the LEFT field fence. Exit Ray. In comes Slayback to try to cap the inning off. But Rick Miller with two home runs on the season will have none of it. HE drives one down the right field line and OUT OF THE PARK! Back to back to back home runs and the Red Sox are on their way to a dramatic win.
