Tigers & Royals tied for Central's 2nd Wild Card berth:
Detroit (K.Young 2-3, 5.43) at Toronto (Jefferson 14-13, 4.22) 1:05 ET
Kansas City (Gale 5-5, 4.06) at Chi Cubs (Reuschel 13-10, 2.65) 2:20 ET
* if Detroit & Kansas City remained tied a one-game playoff will be held at Tiger Stadium on Monday. Detroit won the season-series 8-4 to earn home-field should their be a playoff
Toronto, ON
The first pitch is about to get underway in Toronto. With legions of Detroit fans making the short trip east on the 401, there'll be a lot of scoreboard watching in Exhibition Stadium once the Royals-Cubs game gets underway. Tiger fans might be disappointed they don't see Jack Billingham getting the start on 3-days rest. The Tiger skipper could be looking to set up his staff well for a potential one-game playoff and the wild-card round. Kip Young has shown promise at times though, alternating strong performances with getting shelled. He was passed over in his last turn for Lefty spot-starter Bob Sykes - though that was partly due to the Cardinals woeful record versus southpaws.
The lineups are set:
Detroit
1. Ron Leflore, CF
2. Lou Whitaker, 2B
3. Steve Kemp, LF
4. Rusty Staub, RF
5. Lee Lacy, 3B
6. Jason Thompson, 1B
7. Milt May, C
8. Alan Trammell, SS
9. Kip Young, P
Toronto:
1. Bob Bailor, 3B
2. Willie Upshaw, CF
3. Alan Ashby, C
4. Rico Carty, RF
5. John Mayberry, 1B
6. Alvis Woods, LF
7. Dave McKay, 2B
8. Luis Gomez, SS
9. Jesse Jefferson, P
Chicago, IL
The Royals are currently taking batting practice. They are still 1.5 hours from game time. Chicago will be starting ace Rick Reuschel on three days rest in the final game of their season. The Cubs might be more motivated by the fact they need a win to finish ahead of the cross-town rival White Sox in the final standings, then playing spoiler for the Royals.
