Okay. From Bill James Online's Baserunning Analysis, which uses data from BIS, which DMB, per its Note included with the 2009 SD, uses to rate players:

"... a player's BR Gain (or Loss if a negative number) is the total of all the types of extra baserunning advances minus the (triple) penalty for all the BR Outs compared with what would be expected based on the MLB averages. Zero is average. Plus numbers are above average and negative numbers are below average."

This is not the same thing as a player's stolen base performance, or his running speed.

Below are Andrus's and Dustin Pedroia's baserunning (i.e., base advance) performances for 2009 according to James and BIS. I include both, as Andrus received a Pr Running rating and Pedroia received an Avg Running rating on the 2009 disk. Andrus is -6; Pedroia is +1. The 2009 DMB ratings would seem to jibe with the actual baserunning performances for these two players in 2009. This makes particular sense in light of the fact that DMB uses the same data that James does.

It would seem that Andrus got dinged particularly badly by the triple penalty that applies to Baserunning Outs.
