i am a real newbie so be kind. does a projection disk aloow you to play the 2010 season as the real season is in play?

Sadly, no.  It's a disk in which all the players are made up of projected 2010 performance.

jndo, in my opinion Dan (DSzymborski) is being quite a bit too modest in his response to you. (In case you don't know, Dan is the creator of the ZiPS projection disk.) A projection disk makes a "best effort" (based on sound principles of statistical theory (modeling, etc.)) to project players' performances for the coming season. Although this sort of projection is not by any means an exact science, I feel it's safe to say that, should you play out the 2010 MLB schedule using Dan's forthcoming projection disk, in comparing your results to "real life" you will find many more similarities than differences.
