Red Lambert, scout for the Redwood City Peppers, was enjoying the west coast sunshine even more than normal today. Red was out west on a mission. A mission to sign a young hurler who had been dominating one of the western leagues all season. He was told to look him over and sign him if he liked what he saw. If he was as good in person as the hype led the Peppers front office to believe, Red had been instructed to sign him for next season, the inaugural season for Redwood City, no matter how much it cost. He was told to act quickly before his current team signed him to a long term deal. Red had watched Tim Lincecum pitch at home in a late season ballgame. The hype was accurate. This Lincecum kid looked like the real deal. However, someone else also caught Red's eye that day. The youngster on the hill for the visitors that day looked very impressive. Red thought he had the look and the stuff of a guy who was going to turn into a star himself. When Red got the go ahead from the front office to sign them both he was thrilled and a little shocked. After all, he had only been sent on the trip because the top scout for the Peppers had become to sick to make the long trip. He had only been hired because someone in the front office owed him a favor. He thought maybe these guys do still believe in this old scout. Then he thought it was more likely that they just needed warm bodies for the new league and that the Peppers had enough money to get another pitcher if he was wrong. No matter what the reasons, he was just happy to have been told yes. Red had not heard much of that for some time. His spirits were lifted even more when he was able to convince both players to change teams and leagues for next season. Of course the considerable resources of Redwood City and the big numbers Red slid across the table to each of them helped. Although he could not really take credit for Lincecum, he had just been there to confirm and sign, Red hoped that the signing of Matt Cain would be the one that would restore his reputation in the baseball world. He was hopeful that he had just signed the two guys who would anchor the top half of the Peppers rotation for a long time to come. As he drove his rental car back to the airport with the windows down and the sun on his face, he thought that maybe just maybe life could be good again. Maybe his days as a has been were over.
