The P/S is posted just to clarify my statement about a rare combination. Much like the wikipedia quote classifies it; it simply means he was talented in two of the "5 tools" categories we all care so much about. Don Zimmer and all the third base coaches in the NL from the 80's will and have attested to his arm strength. AVG/DEF I believe were quite above average. He hit .300 or .299 5 times. And didn't really fall off until his knees were both requiring hours of taping/therapy a day.

Oh, and a funny Ralph Kiner story... back in his hey day he went to the Pittsburgh ownership and told them how he deserved a raise due to his leading the NL in HR's for 6 years in a row. His owner asked him what place the Pirates finished that year, Ralph said last. His owner said, I could have anyone play first and still finish last. Ralph walked out.
