That's an impressive list, no doubt. Arguing the anti-Dawson side, I guess I'd point out that of the Hall of Famers on the list, Kaline and Williams played a large portion of their careers in the offense-deprived 1960's, making their totals more impressive in context, Banks had his best years as a shortstop-- which, again, makes them more valuable, and Tony Perez is a borderline selection who played a large role on one of the greatest teams in history AND played his first few productive years in the 60's.
So in my opinion, four of the five HOF'ers on the list were in some way distinctly better than the numbers suggest, and/or not really good arguments for putting Dawson into the Hall. And none of the non-HOF'ers on the list look like they're going in, except maybe Sheffield, and he seems like a longshot. That leaves Dave Winfield, who was a clear Hall of Famer and obviously similar to Dawson. I could argue that he got the 3,000 hits while Dawson was a few hundred shy, but that seems petty. He's a solid comp.
I don't want to go overboard with this. It's quite a good list, and the fact that nobody is "truly similar" to Dawson (similarity score of 900 or more, IIRC? Or 950?) means he was a great and unique player. And dang it, I really did like him. So I guess there's no rule that says I
have
to keep arguing the anti-Dawson side... ;-)
If it had been my ballot, I'd have voted for Alomar, Larkin, Blyleven, Raines, and McGwire, with Dawson down in the second group of "guys on the bubble," along with Edgar Martinez, Alan Trammell, Murphy, and maybe Jack Morris or Lee Smith. They probably wouldn't have gotten my vote, but a few more charts like that and who knows? Anyway it's not my ballot and Dawson is in. So long as Alomar and Blyleven follow him next year, I reckon I'll cope...
