Craig Biggio stood on the dugout steps, gripping his bat, hoping for one more chance. Just one more swing in this Kangaroo Cup. Things had not gone the way he'd hoped. Not even close. Just one more swing, he thought, one more swing.
Here came the pitch . . .
Tom Glavine prepared his delivery, ignoring the weariness he felt all over his body, in his left shoulder, in his left arm. All off-season to rest, he thought to himself. All off-season.
Glavine had been the Grassy Skirts' worst starting pitcher of the Kangaroo Cup. By far. But he didn't care a bit. Just one more pitch, he thought, just one more pitch.
In Game One, Glavine had surrendered the first Kangaroo Cup run every scored by the Urapunga Nature Boys. It was the bottom of the 6th inning, and the Grassy Skirts already led by 4 runs. Glavine would leave for a pinch-hitter in the 7th, and Urapunga would make it close against the Grassy bullpen before losing 4-3.
In Game Two Jamie Moyer tossed 8 innings of 3-hit shutout baseball for Grassy for a 5-0 win.
In Game Three Dave Burba was even better than Moyer, going all the way for a 3-hit shutout and a 3-0 win.
Now it was Game Four. Glavine had allowed his 2nd run, a solo home run by Bobby Abreu in the 7th. But by that time it was 4-0 Grassy, and Raul Mondesi's 2nd home run of the game made it 5-1. Now Glavine pitched in the 9th, having allowed 2 more runs than the other two starters combined. Still, 2 runs in 14 2/3 innings wasn't bad. Two runs in 15 innings would be even better. Glavine focused on the strike zone of pinch-hitter Stan Javier. The 1-2 pitch flew from Glavine's fingers. Javier swung, but the ball wasn't there. A moment later it crossed the strike zone just where Javier's bat had been, then settled into Mike Lieberthal's glove. The Season Fifteen Kangaroo Cup was over. For the first time ever, it was over in just four games. And the Grassy Skirts, the losingest franchise in ABL history, had just won their first ever Kangaroo Cup.
Tom Glavine stood his ground on The Mound as his teammates stormed toward him. On this very mound seven years ago . . . well, no time for that now. This is a time of celebration. The ghost exorcised, the Grassy Skirts finished with whatever curse they'd stumbled onto. Glavine felt the weight of his teammates pressing on him, but didn't care. They were the champions. The Grassy Skirts were, officially, the best team in the Australian Baseball League.
It was glorious.
