"He struck him out! He struck him out! It's all over!" That's all the exasperated Urapunga announcer could get out. Fourteen seasons of frustration were over, and the Urapunga Nature Boys, finally, were champions of the West. Craig Biggio started it with a double to left. When Glenallen Hill misplayed the ball, Biggio kept on running, hitting 3rd in full stride and diving home in a cloud of Nature Boy soil for a 1-0 lead in the 1st. In the very next inning Kevin Young socked a 2-run home run, and Urapunga was 21 outs away from the title. Bret Saberhagen got most of those 21 outs in dominating fashion. After a 1st inning hit, Saberhagen held the Salmon Gums Fisheaters hitless until a double and a single in the 9th. With 2 out, rookie manager (was he still a rookie? By now it didn't seem possible) Terry Pendleton called on his ace Trevor Hoffman for one more out. Hoffman got it, striking out Hill with a 1-2 changeup that nearly had the big leftfielder lying in the dirt. Game over, Urapunga is champion of the West. Could anything less likely happen?
