Tom Glavine had to remind himself to keep his book. This game wasn't giving him a chance to catch his breath, let alone keep up on all the key pitches. He knew his young, inexperienced Grassy Skirts teammates needed this game to stay in this East race. He also knew he'd seen this kind of game before, the kind of game the defending ABL champion Stawell Stasteps just found a way to win.
Grassy and Stawell had split the first 2 games of this Week Eight series. Glavine had lost on Monday to rookie Kerry Wood 3-2. John Wetteland had saved his 14th in that one, without a blown save yet on the season. Man, that guy was pitching tough. Glavine's roommate, fellow lefty vet Jamie Moyer had won on Tuesday 7-5 to keep Grassy's faint hopes alive. Now, with Grassy 22-22, Stawell 27-17 with just 16 games to play in Season Fifteen, Grassy led 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th. Brian Jordan had almost made it 5-2 in the top of the inning, but Barry Bonds pulled back Jordan's drive over the leftfield wall in 3/65th of a Mile High Stadium, turning a home run into an out.
Two walks put the tying runs on, then Bonds batted against Scott Servais. Glavine tried to will Servais some location, knowing that Bonds would be waiting for that pitch that drifted over the plate. It didn't work; Bonds smacked a line drive off the wall in right to score 1 and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. Grassy manager Tack Porterhouse called for an intentional walk of Mike Piazza. No choice, Glavine knew that, but he also knew that this Stawell team did nothing better than taking pitches. His fears were confirmed soon after when Henry Rodriguez walked to bring home the tying run.
The game stayed knotted through the 9th, through the 10th, through the top of the 11th. In the bottom of the 11th Barry Bonds batted yet again. Two were on, two were out. Glavine forgot about his book, urged reliever David Weathers to somehow get the pill past Bonds. Weathers threw, Bonds swung. A drive to right-center, slicing away from centerfielder Brian Jordan. Bonds had robbed Jordan, could Jordan return the favor? Jordan layed out, reached out his glove, stabbed . . . but the ball eluded him, rolled past him, and the winning run streaked across as the fans in 3/65th screamed their approval. Stawell led the East by 6 games with 15 to play. Could anyone stop this Stawell club?
