The Gympie Legs' shortstop Barry Larkin wanted this game. He was 3 for 3 already, and now batted in the top of the 7th. Stawell led 3-2, but Larkin felt the time was ripe. Reliever Juan Acevedo was in, one was down, and Larkin squeezed his bat handle. Acevedo tried to sneak a change-up past. Dumb. The veteran was ready for it, and slashed it into left for his 4th hit of the night. A moment later Larkin was standing on 2nd with a steal. Mike Piazza, Stawell's young catcher, was quite a hitter, but didn't have much shot at stopping the running game. Larkin dusted himself off.
A moment later he was dirty again, sliding in headfirst on a Delino DeShields infield hit. Then Larkin scored the tying run on Moises Alou's hit, and DeShields and Alou both came across on a double by Paul O'Neill. Gympie added one more as Eric Karros knocked home O'Neill. Gympie 6, Stawell 3. That's more like it, Larkin thought as he sprinted out to shortstop for the bottom of the 7th.
Jerry DiPoto took the mound in the bottom of the 7th. Chipper Jones worked him for a walk, then Gary Sheffield matched Larkin with his 4th hit, a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Barry Bonds was up.
Larkin moved toward right. They always played Bonds to pull, but he was a dangerous man who would take what he was given. This evening, DiPoto gave him too much. Bonds swung at a low, outside pitch and sent it screaming over Larkin's head. It was still going up when it clanked against the bleachers in left-center for a game-tying three run home run.
Larkin caught Bonds' eye as the Stawell leftfielder rounded 2nd. The two had been in the league together a long time. Maybe someday they'd actually get around to talking. Not today, though.
Larkin batted again in the 8th and rapped a 2-out single off John Wetteland. 5 for 5, not a bad day. Larkin stole 2nd, but died there when DeShields became Wetteland's 2nd strikeout victim of the inning. Wetteland was throwing as well as anyone in the ABL right then, and Larkin wondered how Gympie would push a run across against him.
Turned out he was right to wonder. Chipper Jones and Sheffield both singled off Rob Nenn in the bottom of the 8th. It was Sheffield's 5th hit, too, and Barry Bonds batted next. Bonds crossed Gympie up yet again, lacing a single where Larkin would normally have stood, and 2 runs scored when Moises Alou threw wildly to the plate. Wetteland was unreal in the 9th, striking out all 3 Gympie batters to finish the game. Stawell 6, Gympie 6. Could anyone stop this Stawell club?
