Tom Glavine finished his warmup pitches. Opening Day. Nothing like it. He looked down at his green and gray road uniform and thought back to his previous Opening Day starts. The record books said this was his 7th opener for Grassy, by far the most in team history. Last season Grassy had gotten a rare home opener, drawing the third seed against Cooktown's second seed. He and Greg Maddux both made their sixth Opening Day starts that day, and Glavine and Grassy had beaten Maddux and Cooktown 4-3. But as usual for Grassy the joy was short-lived; by the end of the season they were out of the running yet again. Today, on the road again, facing defending champion Stawell and John Smoltz. It was Johnny's third Opening Day start, all of them against Grassy and Glavine. Two seasons ago, Glavine had been right here, on the mound in 3/65th, when Smoltz, making his 2nd Opening Day start, had come within one out of a no-hitter. Stawell and Smoltz went on to glory that season, and Grassy, as usual, finished at the bottom. In fact, in Glavine's nine previous seasons with Grassy, the club had finished in 3rd place 3 times, in 4th place 6. Season Fifteen started no different. Glavine was throwing well, but getting little support. He threw a good pitch to Gary Sheffield, but Shef got it all and deposited it over the wall in left-center for a 1-0 Stawell lead. Grassy tied the score on a Dmitri Young double, but in the bottom of the 9th with Glavine still throwing Quilvio Veras doubled home Andrew Jones for a 2-1 Stawell win. Glavine trudged off the field. So it goes when you play for Grassy.
