I unchecked the DMB9 read only box and applied it to all the folders as you directed but the changes to the color of the field images did not stick. Next, I rechecked the DMB9 properties and the "read only" box was checked after I had earlier unchecked it. So the checking of the "read only" file box is only temporary as the folder reverts to "read only" when it is reopened. Obviously, very frustrating experience.

The read-only property doesn't actually apply to the folder so it doesn't really matter what you see in the folder's read-only property checkbox. Typically, it will appear to be shaded, not actually checked. However, all of the files within the folder and its subfolders will have accepted the change you requested. You can confirm this by checking the properties for any individual file.

Try switching to another database in DMB using File > Change active database. If you close DMB and reopen it is the change to the active database saved or does it revert back to the database that was active before you made the change?
