I really think the key is using a monospace or fixed font.

For instance
If I cut the line score from a boxscore in DMB
then paste it here without doing anything else
this is what I get:

4/8/1959, ACE59-BIS59, Fenway Park

1959 Aces 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 7 0 9 2

If I paste it here
then place code tags around it (before and after)
they look like this [c0de] [/c0de] (but use the letter o instead of the zeroes in the example)
this is what I get:

place the code tags (like above)
then select the lines I want formatted and change the font to monospaced
it looks like this:

Here I will do everything like the last one and then change the size of the font to 4

I encourage you to try this, don't make it any harder than it needs to be.
