On a related note, another thing that doesn't seem to work is to use your starter at one position to be your 1st backup at another. For example, assume Player A starts in RF, and Player B starts in LF. My best-hitting backup outfielder, Player C, is only rated at LF, and my only other player rated at RF, Player D, is a horrible .125 hitter. So my preference would be to list Player B as my starting LF, and also as my first choice to backup Player A in RF. Then, if Player A is hurt or ejected, Player B slides over to RF and my backup LF enters the game. But when I try to do this, the AI skips over my choice for Bckup 1 and moves down the list to the lousy backup RF, leaving Player B in LF. Player C (the one I want to be the LF until Player A is healthy) stays on the bench. So it seems that once someone is selected to start in one position, the AI doesn't normally move him to another position if has other options for filling that position. Since I play in a centralized league where we go through 6 game batches before we can change our MPs, this can be pretty frustrating at times.
I have been able to get around this, sort of, by arranging my MP so that my intended starters are listed in Bckup slots with start percentages of 99. For example, on my current team Vern Stephens is starting in LF but I want him to be the primary backup for my SS, Marty Marion. Max West is my starting RF (because he has a strong arm and Stephens, playing out of position, does not). My best backup at either RF or LF is Paul Waner, who is only rated at RF. So if Marion is hurt, I want Stephens to move to SS, West to move to LF, and Waner to become the RF. I can accomplish this by making Stephens my starting SS, with Marion as the Bckup with a 99 start percentage. West is listed as my starting LF, with Stephens the backup, again with a 99 start percentage. Then Waner is listed as the starting RF, with West as the backup (again, with a 99 start percentage). Then, except for 1 game out of 100, everyone starts where I want them to start. But if Marion is hurt and is out for 4 days, Stephens reverts to starting SS, and the dominoes fall so that West moves to LF and Waner takes over in RF. And if Stephens is hurt, my good backup RF (Waner) enters the game instead of my weaker backup LF because West is shifted over to LF. I can't remember if the dominoes fall the way I want them to in the middle of a game if someone is hurt or ejected, but at least it takes care of the starting lineup until the player is healthy again.
