This is a wonderful thread. It's a great reminder of what drew all of us to Diamond Mind in the first place and keeps us there in spite of the lack of graphics and sound. My favorite things are:
1. The game's realism and ability to replicate Major League Baseball in all eras accurately.
2. The excellent play-by-play, especially in V9. The PBP still hasn't come close to boring me after literally thousands of games and, from time-to-time, I still see something new. I can't imagine how much better the game will become with the additional PBP in the long-awaited patch.
3. The ability of the game to hold my attention and involve me both intellectually and emotionally. One of the other posters to this thread describes DMB as a game for grownups. That very apt description encapsulates the intellectual and emotional hold that the game has on me and, judging from the comments on this site, on most others in the DMB community.
4. Seeing season replays develop. I've replayed 1922 AL and NL, 1930 AL, 1934 AL, 1940 AL, 1955 AL, and 1967 AL. I'm currently in early June in a 1908 AL replay. The pennant races, most of which were very close in real life, have been equally close and exciting in the replays. The individual stats were almost always on target. It really is like stepping back in time and being an eyewitness of some of the great moments and performances in baseball history.
5. The cost, customer service, and structure of the game. Considering the hours I have spent playing this game, DMB is an amazingly inexpensive entertainment value. Luke and Pat are terrific. I can't imagine any other company providing this level of service. Finally, the game engine is virtually fool proof and bug free. It's always available and never crashes. And, if it ever does cause problems, Luke is always there to clean things up.
6. The DMB community. The level of intelligence and cleverness of those who post on this site is remarkable. The dedication to the game and the generosity of those who have developed and made available to others pre-1927 seasons and other programs is unique. And, the normal politeness and warmth of postings, especially considering the passion with which most of us approach the game, is also a plus.
