Why the Reds won- Pete Schourek was one of the best pitchers in the NL all season long, and tonight he outdid himself. Pitching on 3 days rest, Schourek threw 7.2 innings of shutout ball, striking out 9 as he dominated the Padres. Jeff Brantley came in to pitch the final 1.2 to complete the shutout and send the Reds to the NLCS.
Why the Padres lost- They simply couldn't get on the board against Schourek and Brantley. In 5 separate innings, the Padres had runners in scoring position and they couldn't bring any of them home.
Turning points-1. Joey Hamilton was matching zeroes with Schourek until the 7th. With Lenny Harris on 3rd and Eddie Taubensee on 2nd, Bret Boone smacked a single to right field. Harris scored easily. Padres first baseman Eddie Williams cut off Tony Gwynn's throw to the plate, allowing Taubensee to score as well as Williams threw out Boone trying to advance to second. Perhaps Williams should have seen if Gwynn's throw could have beat the slow-footed Taubenesee to the plate- the game might have unfolded differently if the Padres' deficit was only one run.
2. Brantley made things interesting in the 9th. With one out, Ken Caminiti doubled. Brantley struck out Williams for out # 2, but then walked Melvin Nieves. The next batter, Brad Ausmus singled to left field to load the bases. (Would Caminiti have tried to score if the score was 1-0?) With the bases loaded, Brantley was able to entice Andujar Cedeno to fly out to Reggie Sanders in right field to end it.
Notable-Caminiti was 8 for 15 in a losing cause for the Padres during the series... The NLCS will open on October 10 in Cincinnati. Look for David Wells to start in Game 1 for the Reds... It will be the Reds' 3rd trip to the NLCS since the replay started in 1988. Oakland has had 4 trips (1989-1992). Pittsburgh had 3 (1990-1992), and Atlanta has had 3 (1991, 1993-1994)... Reds firstbaseman Hal Morris aggravated a hamstring injury running out a grounder in the 7th and had to leave the game, but he's expected to be on the roster for the NLCS...
