The Cleveland Indians snapped their three game losing streak with a relatively easy
6-2 win over the Senators. Dale Mitchell, (.238 ), Ray Boone, (.252 ), and
Jim Hegan, (.249), all homered for the Tribe to back the complete game pitching
effort of Mike Garcia.
Garcia, (7 - 6), threw a whopping 149 pitches but, even so, struckout the last batter
he faced.

Coleman (0-4, 7.68) vs Pierce (11-5, 3.17)
The Philadelphia Athletics overcame a 5-2 deficit to defeat the Chicago White Sox
by a 10 - 6 margin. A four sixth inning gave the Phillies a 6-5 lead and a four run
9th inning broke a 6-6 tie.
Secondbaseman Pete Suder, (.259), had two key RBIs in the 9th inning
Secondplace Chicago has now dropped 5 straight games and, like the rest of the
American League at this point, seems solidly out of contention in the American
League. If The Yankees defeat the Tigers later today the secondplace White
Sox will be 13 games back.

The New York Yankees continued their romp to the Anerican Lague pennant with a
16-9 win over the Detroit Tigers. Pitching was missing from both sides, but, the
Yankees had more firepower.
Yankee thirdbaseman Bobby Brown, (.311), and Jerry Coleman, (.225), each had
4 RBIs. Brown and catcher Yogi Berra, (.338), had four hits each.
Tom Morgan, (10-1), the second of three Yankee pitchers, gets the win.

Boston @ St.Louis
Kiely (5-3, 4.14) vs Widmar (1-4, 8.31)
Secondbaseman Bobby Doerr, (.294), smacked a two run double in the top
of the third inning snapping a 2-2 tie and giving Boston a 4-2 lead. It was a
lead the BoSox would not relinquish.
Leo Kiely, (6-3), worked 8 solid innings to get the win. Ellis Kinder worked
the 9th ining as Kiely was showing signs of fatigue.
Ted Williams continues with his torrid hitting. Williams, (.355), doubled and
homered scoring twice and driving in a run.
Boston has won 7 consecutive games.

Game 1 of doubleheader
Pittsburgh @ New York (N)
Dickson (8-6, 4.25) vs Maglie (7-8, 3.58)
With a 23 MPH wind blowing out the last place Pirates and the first place
Giants put on a fireworks display. When the dust settled the Pirates
had pounded out 11-9 win. There were 10 homers in total, five by each team.
Pittsburgh's Castiglion(8), Howerton 2(9), Kiner(24), Dickson(1),
and New York's Mays(18), Thomson 2(20), Irvin(14), Dark(5), all
homered.
The Pirates had a comfortable 11-4 heading into the bottom of the
9th inning when the Giants erupted for 5 runs. They hit three homers
that inning but the rally fell just short.

The New York Giants rebounded from their Game 1 loss
to score an easy 9-2 win in the nightcap. Back-up
catcher Ray Noble,(.281), ripped a three run homer
in the 4-run, 4th inning. Seldom used Luchy Lohrke.
(.400), had 4 RBIs on the day with an RBI single and
a three run home run.
Dave Koslo,(5-4), get the complete game win, his second
complete game of the season.

The Brooklyn Dodgers pulled out an exciting 9th inning
victory over the Cincinnati Reds as the Brooklyn wins
by a 3-2 margin.
Brooklyn leftfielder, Andy Pafko,(.270), leading
off the bottom of the 9th, blasted his 24th
homerun of the season to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the
Dodgers to a hard-fought win in the first of two games
today.
Bud Podbielan, (4-0, the 4th Dodger pitcher, gets the win.
Frank Smith,(5-3), takes the loss.

Fox (4-7, 7.12) vs Palica (2-0, 2.74)
Howie Fox pitched his finest game of the season as he
blanks the Brooklyn Dodgers, 1-0. Fox scattered just
five hits. He struckout one and walked none.
Cincinnati leftfielder Joe Adcock,(.243), gave Fox the
only run he would with a solo home run in the 7th inning.
It was Adcocks 6th homer of the season.
The win gave the Reds a split of todays twinbill and keeps
the 4th place Redlegs 5.5 games behind the NL co leader,
Brooklyn and the Giants.

limiting the Braves to an unearned run while striking out 8

driving in four runs with an RBI single and a three run home run.

Schultz (6-11, 5.24) vs Bickford (3-3, 3.61)
A four run seventh inning for Boston cancelled a Chicago
four run Cub third inning and lifted the Braves to a 7-5
win in the laste game today earning the Braves a split of
the doubleheader.
Boston catcher Ebba St. Claire,(.234) ripped a two run
double in the 7th for the big blow of the inning.
Phil Paine,(2-1), the second Boston pitcher, gets the
win and Chet Nichols earns Save #2. Chicago's Cal McLish,
blew the save and takes the loss as he drops to 0-11.

Game 1 of doubleheader
ST. LOUIS (N) @ PHILADELPHIA (N)
Staley (8-6, 3.22) vs Jordan (0-0, 0.00)
The St. Louis Cardinals used a three run, fourth inning
to propel themselves to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia
Phillies. Tom Glaviano,(.289), had the big hit, a two run single.
The win snapped the third place Cardinals two game losing streak.
Thirdbasman Wally Westlake,(.301), ripped a two run home run
in the top of the first inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Gery Staley,(9-6), gets the win while Niles Jordan,(0-1) making his
first start, and first appearance of the season, was tagged with
the loss. It was a bad day for Jordan, although he did not pitch
all that badly. He was forced to leave the game in the 5th inning
with discomfort in his pitching. He was placed on the 15 Day DL
immediately after the game.
Cardinal rightfielder, Enos Slaughter, also left the game with a
mld sprain. He is not expected to miss any time.

Game 2 of doubleheader
ST. LOUIS (N) @ PHILADELPHIA (N)
C Boyer (0-3, 7.03) vs K Johnson (5-5, 4.70)
Pitching was noticeably lacking in Game 2 of today's
doubleheader. The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
The Redbirds could not hold the lead. The Cardinals
big inning was the 2nd inning when they scored five runs,
four on a Grand Slam home run by Stan Musial,(.361)
The Phillies, however, charged back with a seven run, third
inning. WHen the game ended and the carnage was complete and
the Phillies had a 15-14 win.
The game featured 29 runs, 41 hits, and 3 errors, all by
Philadelphia - the errors, that is. Rightfielder Del Ennis,
(.284) and thirdbaseman Mike Goliat,(.180), each had three
RBI. Both Ennis and Goliat hit homeruns.
The Phillies fifth reliever, Jim Konstanty, blew his sixth
save, but, recorded the win. He is now 5-4. St. Louis fourth
reliever, Dick Bokelmann, (5-4), gets the loss.

Game 1
WASHINGTON @ CLEVELAND
Moreno (1-3, 3.91) vs Wynn (11-6, 3.78)
Early Wynn, (12-6), recovered from his last two sub-par
starts to defeat the Washington Senators, 9-3, in front
of 22,413 Indian fans. Wynn allowed seven hits while
striking out six and walking three enroute to his 8th
complete game of the season.
A big five run eighth inning broke open a 4-3 game with
the big blow of the th inning being a Grand Slam home run
by Dale Mitchell,(.237).
Cleveland has now won the first two games in this series and
will try to sweep today's doubleheader with a win in the late
game.

WASHINGTON @ CLEVELAND
Gromek (1-4, 4.01) v Hudson (3-6, 3.70)
The Cleveland Indians completed the sweep of today's
doubleheader against Washington with an 8-2 win of
the nightcap. Steve Gromek,(2-4), gets the complete
game win, his third complete game of the season.
The Indians held a three run lead until the 8th inning
when they exploded for 5 runs to ensure the victory.
Indian firstbaseman Luke Easter,(.282) and thirdbaseman
Al Rosen,(.262),each had a pair of RBIs for the Tribe.
Cleveland has a modest three game winning streak.

Game 1
PHILADELPHIA (A) @ CHICAGO (A)
Shantz (8-4, 3.71) vs Holcombe (8-3, 2.38)
The Philadelphia Athletics got a solid performance
from Bobby Shantz as the Athhletics defeat Chicago,4-2,
in the first of two games today. Shantz,(9-4), worked
8.2 innings but had to give way after giving up two
solid hits in the 9th inning. Sam Zoldak retired the
final batter for his 6th save of the season.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the 7th inning, A's
centerfielder Dave Philley,(.323), to score Gus
Zernial with what proved to be the game winner, Philley
had three hits on the day.

Game 2 PHILADELPHIA (A) @ CHICAGO (A) Wyse (0-1, 5.25) vs Rogovan (9-4, 3.28) The Chicago White Sox rebounded for their loss in Game 1 of today's doubleheader with a 7-3 win in game two. Firstbaseman Eddie Robinson,(.330-23-75), had three more hits and three RBIs. His 23rd homer of the season came in the seven run, fouth inning; it was a three run dinger. Saul Rogovan, (10-4), wokred eight innings for the win.
